Localization World October 20th - 22nd, 2009 Silicon Valley Michael Smolens -

How can agencies & translators create new sources of revenue? Offer all your clients the ability to make their video assets available in as many languages as is their website or text based content Can be done by the same translators - but requires a disruptive way of thinking

First, a few examples and then a detailed, hands-on workshop & chance to subtitle in this room and see your work in real time

There is no crowd! The Moonstone Archive

You must excite it! There is no crowd out there, waiting to translate your content You must create your own crowd through the quality of your media Video, like music, has the ability to attract, even without words

Dialogue brings passion Ctd 2005

Especially when it is in one’s native language Content that is Well produced Compelling Entertaining Inspirational Educational Informative Culturally relevant generates passion and engagement

Sharing the experience Mr. Kris

Triggers action When you are moved by a short video or a feature film, and you realize that to subtitle it in your native language is Fun Easy Legal you will gladly do it for your friends, family & countrymen

On home page of Twitter 8.8 million views into 69 languages embedded on 9,900 URLs TWITTE R

Examples on the web

Controlled crowd sourcing permission by video & by language - a translator, an editor & a final ‘publish button’ 4,400 videos into 79 languages by over 2,400 volunteers in 4.5 months

On mobile devices in multiple languages / any font

Feature film (2 hrs) in English with 90% of 720,000 views in languages other than English

How does it work? It works the same whether subtitling/translation is done by professionals or volunteers Browser based, requires no downloaded software Can be done privately or collaboratively Can be checked, edited anywhere on the web The level of Quality is up to the content owner - it is different for each client (not right or wrong, JUST different)

One agency did 451 minutes of subtitling Jul - Sep 09 per actual video info below for one client - from Swedish to English. This represented $11,275 in NEW revenue/qtr plus new work for a translator and a happy client!!!

Live - web based workshop & tutorial Questions & answers and interactive discussion

Video is becoming ubiquitous! If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth... Video cameras are standard in mobile devices, editing software is free and easy to use, uploading to the web is nearly immediate, free storage and distribution options are growing

Telling stories to the world! babasteve
