IT’S QUIZ TIME!

A. Negative Reinforcement B. Negative Punishment C. Positive Reinforcement D. Positive Punishment Receiving comments such as “Good job!" and “On a roll!" are examples of what behaviorist concept?

Try Again Click the arrow to try again. Use the information in the table to help you choose again. increases behaviordecreases behavior add a stimuluspositive reinforcementpositive punishment remove a stimulusnegative reinforcementnegative punishment

You’re Right! Comments such as “Good job!” demonstrate positive reinforcement because a stimulus is added immediately after the response in order to increase the likelihood of the behavior in the future.

Which of the following shows positive punishment? A.Applause for a correct answer B.Comments like "super!" and "wonderful!” C.No response D.Unpleasant sound for wrong answer

Try Again Click the arrow to try again. Use the information in the table to help you choose again. increases behaviordecreases behavior add a stimuluspositive reinforcementpositive punishment remove a stimulusnegative reinforcementnegative punishment

You’re Right! An unpleasant sound following an incorrect response is a positive punishment. It is the addition of a stimulus in hopes of decreasing the likelihood of the behavior in the future.

A. Continuous B. Fixed Ratio C. Variable Interval D. Fixed Interval After every correct answer, the player receives praise. What kind of reinforcement schedule is this?

Try Again Click the arrow to try again. It is constantly reinforcing because every correct response is positively reinforced.

You’re Right! It is continuous reinforcement because every correct response is positively reinforced. Bonus: We’ve also provided continuous positive reinforcement by saying “You’re right!” every time you answered our questions correctly.

Final screenshot winners! Final scores!

Get your head in the game! 6 Questions we should always be asking……..

How do we learn? We learn by practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The more we practice these skills, the stronger we are at them. The game Math Mayhem utilizes strategies of operant conditioning in which correct student responses are followed by a reinforce in order for their reactions to gain in strength.

How do we transfer to new contexts? Hopefully, students can use what they have mastered in the classroom setting and apply them to real-world problems that involve adding, subtracting, multiplication and division. Students will rely on their prior knowledge and strengthen their skills leading them to a better understanding for story problems to come in the future.

How do we forget? If we can't connect our learning to information we have already learned, we will forget. This game does not connect the math problems to the outside world; it is an isolated context. Students could forget their skills from this game if they don't understand how to connect arithmetic principles to their worlds. Students may also forget these skills if they do not continue to practice the skills. The skills will eventually become extinct if they are not connected to prior understanding.

What drives us to learn? From a behavioral perspective, the game is fun and the competition can motivate students to beat their own scores as well as others.

What do these questions mean for how we teach? When teaching from this perspective, students are assumed to respond the stimuli in the same way and it doesn't always allow room for individualized instruction, individual pacing, or individual learning styles.

What role does technology play in this? This is a fun interactive way to practice the sometimes tedious task of mathematics memorization. It provides immediate feedback and challenges students to not only race against other players but also the clock. It utilizes many positive and negative reinforcers that follow immediately.
