Presentation transcript:

Warm up  Answer the following questions on the 5 themes of Geography:  Describe absolute and relative location.  Describe some positive and negative human interactions on the environment.  Describe a few reasons why people may move from place to place.

 Latitude and Longitude!

Latitude  Lines that run across the grid.  The flat lines!  The equator is a line of latitude.  The equator divides the earth into 2 hemispheres (North and South)

Longitude  The lines that run up and down.  The “tall” lines!  Longitude lines also called meridians.  The prime meridian divides earth into 2 hemispheres (East and West)

Latitude/Longitude  The prime meridian is the 0 point of Longitude  The equator is the 0 point of Latitude

Do Latitude and Longitude affect climate?

Weather vs. Climate  What’s the difference?

Weather VS Climate  Generally refers to day-to- day temperature or precipitation!  Rain, sunshine, hail, flooding, blizzards, ice storms, cold front, warm front  Measured over a short time.  Refers to the average conditions of a place over a given period of time.  Temperature, sunshine, humidity, phenomenon (fog, frost, etc).  Measured over a long period of time. cIT-Q

Rest of class 1. Complete “Where in the world” hand out.  When you finish, turn it into McGinn BEFORE you get a computer to work on your scoop. 2. Work on your weather/climate “scoop”.  Remember: Current event (last 2-3 years) relating to climate or weather.
