Soul Bass Presentation by Charley Hill and Chloe Hagger

Soul Bass himself… Soul Bass was a very successful Graphic Designer and Film maker. He was recognized for his design of film posters, title sequences and Logos. Soul Bass had some amazing opportunity's during his career and he got to work with some phenomenal Film Makers, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder and many more. “To younger film directors, Saul Bass was a cinema legend with whom they longed to work. In 1987, he was persuaded to create the titles for James Brooks’ Broadcast News and then for Penny Marshall’s 1988 Big.” “Saul Bass was born in New York on May 8th 1920 and studied Graphic Art at Brooklyn College, NY before moving to Los Angeles in Bass was a pioneer of the pared down graphic, favoring minimalist symbolic images, which has been in vogue since he began designing for the film industry in the early 1950s.”

Soul Bass and his work… Logo Design “The average life span of a Soul Bass Logo is 34 years.” This is the 6th AT&T Bell System logo. Bass also designed the AT&T “globe” logo for AT&T after the break up of the Bell System. AT&T Bell System Designed in Bell Logo If I do my job well, the identity program will also clean up the image of the company, position it as being contemporary and keep it from ever looking dated”. — Saul Bass

Konika Minolta Designed in 1978 (new logotype designed in 2003 by Konika Minolta) Quaker Designed in 1971 The Kleenex Logo was redesigned by Sterling Brands, however the only thing that changed was the angel of the typeface and the colour.

KOSÉ COSMETICS (1959) Kosé is one of the top cosmetics manufacturers in Japan and in the world. The company still uses the same logo as they did in This shows how successful and well produced his work is. AlCOA (1963) and The FULLER PAINTS (1964) have both been manipulated and changed over the years. Although they are still Soul Bass’s work, with little tweaks to make them more current. Fuller paints has been changed to Fuller O’Brien as Fuller O’Brien took the idea and manipulated it to match his name. KIBUN (1964) The company still uses the same symbol.

Soul Bass created some of the most recognizable and iconic logos of all time, but as times goes on, his designs are gradually disappearing. One particular Saul Bass logo that has disappeared is the famous United ‘tulip,’ which was used by the company for 37 years until the merger with Continental in This caused quite a controversy in the design world, because its unsuccessful to replace a Saul Bass logo with a generic clipart-like version that Is no where near as successful and eye-catching as the original. Soul Bass: Disappearing Designs…

Soul Bass… Poster Design Soul Bass’ movie poster design for Alfred Hitchcock's classic 'Vertigo' Soul Bass uses his signature graphic style for this poster. The contrasting colours complement each other and the bold, strong typeface stands out and creates a very powerful poster. 'Anatomy of a Murder’ Movie Poster “Saul Bass' body of work distinguishes him as one of the most versatile and innovative graphic designers of the 20th Century. Alongside his talent for creating definitive visual references in the form of film posters.”

“West Side Story’ Movie Poster ‘X Men First Class’ Movie Poster ‘Back To The Future’ Movie Poster The Typography used in Soul Bass’ posters are very repetitive. The fonts are very bold and eye catching which complements the posters.
