What is Herbal Medicine Herbal medicine is the use of plants (mostly herbs) which is used to treat diseases and to make people’s life and health better. Herbal medicine is used to treat a variety of diseases which include: Anxiety Arthritis Depression High blood pressure Insomnia Hormonal imbalances Migraines Skin problems (such as eczema) The herbs can act onto peoples bodies as powerful as pharmaceutical drugs and it needs to be treated with a lot of care.

History of Herbal Medicine Herbal medicine has its origins in ancient cultures including the Egyptians, American, Indians and Chinese people. Some of the herbs have strong ingredients and it should be treated with the same amount of care as pharmaceutical drugs. In fact, it is said that pharmaceutical drugs are based on the synthesised versions of naturally occurring compounds which are found in plants. For example, the heart drug digitalis was derived from the herb foxglove. In recent years, the interest of herbal medicine has gone up in a lot of amounts, which leads up to a greater scientific interest in the medicinal use of the plants. There have been many international studies which have shown that plants are capable of treating diseases and improving peoples health (often without any significant side effects).
