Why a survey?  SB 1108 (Padilla, English Learners: reclassification) –Report to State Board and Legislature  Policies in place in districts statewide  Recommendations about effective policies  Report due Jan 1, 2014  PPIC will survey school districts –On-line –20 minutes –No individual information 2

Survey Topics  Establishing primary language and screening for EL status  Four reclassification criteria –English proficiency –Basic skills –Teacher evaluation –Parent consultation 3

Potential next steps  Report on diversity of district reclassification policies – Potentially link reclassification policies to district EL and RFEP outcomes – In time for Jan 1, 2014 SB1108 deadline  PPIC longer-term study with a few California districts –In time for SB 1108’s 2017 deadline 4
