What is the role of media? Mass media are the means of communication, that reach large numbers of people in a short time. Listen to:

Television in Britain Broadcasting in Britain is controlled by: The British Broadcasting Corporation – 4 public channels (BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3, BBC 4). The Independent Broadcasting Authority – 5 private channels(ITV 1, ITV 2, ITV 3, Channel 4, Channel 5). There are also satellite and cable channels.

Television in Britain The first daily TV programmes in the world were on the BBC in Popular soap operas are: East Enders (about people in the east of London). Coronation Street (about a street in Manchester - since1960 !). On average, people in Britain watch TV 23 hours a week.

Television in the USA There are three big private national networks: ABC, NBC and CBS. There exist more than 1300 commercial and 370 non-commercial television programmes.
