THE AMERICAN MUSICAL By: Micah Talbot

HISTORY OF MOVIE MUSICALS  By 1928, chaos reigned in Hollywood.  Most major studios had been caught unprepared by the overwhelming demand for talking films.  Critically acclaimed silent films were suddenly playing to near-empty theatres.  Theatre owners watched locals drive off to the nearest city with a sound theatre.  Silent films were suddenly yesterday's news, and no one in the industry was sure what lay ahead.  Studios raced to build soundproof facilities and find ways to master a very different way of making films.  Executives purchased the rights to hundreds of existing plays and songs, and every major studio hired Broadway composers to write new screen musicals.

HISTORY (CONTINUED)  Sound completely supplanted silent film by  Silent stars with thick accents or voices that could not overcome early recording techniques slipped into quick obscurity.  Studio executives used sound as an excuse to dispose of "difficult" stars.  The last major studio to switch to sound production was MGM studious.  The studio's sound team invented two vital technologies: Sound editing and pre-recorded tracks.  the use of pre-recorded sound allowed for more creative camera angles with better sound quality, it quickly became standard procedure for all musical films.  Movie-musicals began to captivate audiences and were commercial successes and remain so to this day.

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF MUSICALS  Mise-en-scène is a key element.  The biggest, and most obvious, element of of movie-musicals is the music.  Lighting is extremely important in live stage Theatre. It is also equally important to the film version of the musical.  Camera angles in movie-musicals also tend to be exaggerated.  These elements are crucial to the story-telling of a movie-musical
