Recap of Earth-Moon Comparison
Earth 6400 kilometer radius 23 degree axis tilt (seasons!) Surface temps –73 to 48 C (- 100 to 120F) Thick atmosphere, mild greenhouse effect Liquid water – lots! - at surface 1738 kilometer radius 7 degree axis tilt Surface temps C to – 153 C (224 F to –243 F) No atmosphere No liquid water Moon
Earth Active volcanoes - chains Earthquakes - chains Mountain chains Active magnetic field Few craters Geologically Active! Moon NO active volcanoes Few moonquakes NO mountain chains NO active magnetic field Buckets of craters Geologically Inactive!

Revolve Orbit Rotate Axis Earth-Moon Vocabulary
Moon Vocabulary Waxing- To show a progressively larger illuminated area from new moon to full moon. Lighted side is getting BIGGER and on the RIGHT! Waning- To show a progressively smaller illuminated area from full moon to new moon. Lighted side is getting SMALLER and on the LEFT! Gibbous- More than half but less than fully illuminated. Means “hump”. Crescent- The figure of the moon as it appears in its first or last quarter, with concave and convex edges terminating in points. Means “curved”.
Eclipse- Occurs when one object passes through the shadow of another. Means “outshine or surpass”. Lunar Eclipse- The full moon passes through Earth’s shadow and appears eclipsed, or shaded. It may also look red. A total Lunar Eclipse lasts more than 2 hours. The Earth is between the Moon and the Sun. Solar Eclipse- Earth passes through the shadow of the moon, and the sun appears hidden behind the moon. A total Solar Eclipse lasts no more than 7.5 minutes. The moon is between the Earth and the Sun.
Eclipses Only 7 eclipses occur in a single year. –2 Lunar –5 Solar
