Introduction to Word Processing

 1.Word Processing programs are sued to type reports, letters, and tables.  2.There are many differences between typewriters and computers with word-processing programs.  3.Word-processing programs show all formatting on the screen, which is called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)  4.The Title Bar shows the name of the document and the name of the program used to create it.  5.There are many ways to move around inside a document.  6.Text can be selected with the mouse or with the keyboard.  7.When the cursor automatically goes to the next line if a word doesn’t fit, it is called word wrap.  8.You can customize your document on a computer.  9.The Insert tab of the Ribbon contains short-cuts for changing the appearance of your text.  10.The ruler is measured in inches.  11.The blinking line that shows where your text or object will be inserted is called the cursor.  12.To move very quickly to the end of the document, you can press Ctrl and End.  13.To move quickly to the left margin, press Home.  14.Holding Ctrl while clicking anywhere within a sentence will select the entire sentence.  15.If you want to change the name of the document and still keep the original document, you should use the Save As command.  16.When text is selected, it is encased in a light blue background.  17.You can select an entire paragraph by triple-clicking on it.  18.A header is text that appears at the top of every page of a document. Editing

 Default alignment is at the left.  Left aligned text is smooth on the left and jagged at the right.  Hold Ctrl and press the letter L to left align the line or paragraph.  Click Align Text Left command on the Home Ribbon. Word Processing22

 Centered text is jagged on both sides, centered on the line.  Click the Center command on the Home Ribbon.  Hold Ctrl and press the letter E to center a line or paragraph. Word Processing23

 Right aligned text is smooth on the right and jagged on the left.  Click the Align Text Right command on the Home Ribbon.  Hold Ctrl and press the letter R to right align a line or paragraph. Word Processing24

 Justified text is smooth on both sides.  Click the Justify command on the Home Ribbon.  Hold Ctrl and press the letter J to justify a line or paragraph. Word Processing25

 Red squiggly lines mean a misspelled word.  Green squiggly lines mean a grammatical error.  Click the Spelling & Grammar button on the Review Ribbon.  Press F7 to start the spelling and grammar checker.  Spelling and Grammar checker is not always correct. Word Processing26

 Click the Insert tab.  Click the Header Command  Use Blank (Three Columns)  Type your name at the left.  Block in the center.  Assignment name at the right. Word Processing27

 Select text first if more than one paragraph.  Click the Line Spacing command on the Home Ribbon.  Hold Ctrl and press the number 2 to double- space. Word Processing28

 Tool that lists synonyms and antonyms for words.  Click the Thesaurus button on the Review Ribbon.  Right-click and choose synonyms.  Hold Shift and press F7. Word Processing29

 Click Find from the Home Ribbon.  Find will place your cursor at the beginning of each occurrence of the word.  Click Replace from the Home Ribbon.  Replace will actually replace a word or formatting with something else. Word Processing30

 Original text or object stays in the document when copying.  “Copy” of item is stored to the clipboard in computer’s memory.  Click the Copy command on the Home Ribbon.  Can paste an unlimited number of times.  Click the Paste button on the Home Ribbon. Word Processing31

 Original text or object is removed from document when cutting.  Item is saved to clipboard.  Click the Cut button on the Home Ribbon. Word Processing32

 Hold Ctrl and press the letter C to copy.  Hold Ctrl and press the letter V to paste.  Hold Ctrl and press the letter X to cut. Word Processing33

 The default setting is left-aligned text.  Text can be changed to left-, center-, right-aligned, or justified.  Red squiggly lines in the text indicate a misspelled word.  Green squiggly lines in the text indicate a mistake in grammar.  If you want to change the alignment of more than one paragraph, select the text first.  There are also keyboard shortcuts to align the text.  A header is text that can be inserted at the top of every page of a document.  The thesaurus shows both synonyms and antonyms for words.  The Replace tool is a quick way to replace several occurrences of text.  Cutting removes the selected text and places it on the clipboard.  Copying makes a copy of the selected text and places it on the clipboard.  Pasting takes whatever is on the clipboard and places it in the document.  You can paste an unlimited number of times.
