JANUARY 13, 2009 Please Do Now: As we discussed in class, a communicable disease is a condition which can be passed from person to person. A chronic disease is a condition which lasts for a long period of time. In complete sentences, what are three communicable and/or chronic diseases that you would like to know more about? Why do you have an interest in these conditions? Finish time: 7:52 EQ: How can I find research and compose an intelligent research paper? Agenda: – Explanation of iSearch Picture from: 86.jpg

ISEARCH The iSearch paper is different than a traditional research paper. The iSearch paper requires the writer to research a topic in which they have a specific interest. An iSearch is considered less formal than the traditional research paper because it allows the writer to use I as they write. Picture from:

ISEARCH The iSearch paper will require you to explain prior knowledge but will also require you to engage in comprehensive research with regards to your paper. In an effort to help you both organize your paper and to keep your research on topic, you will be required to answer three “burning questions”. You will need to show where you retrieved all of your information from and provide citations in MLA format in an effort to avoid plagiarism. Picture from: 3/F5Y3TLY5/FF49K43F5Y3TLY5.MEDIUM.jpg

BURNING QUESTIONS Your paper will be built around three burning questions. Burning questions are questions that you have regarding your topic. An example of a burning question could be, “How is asthma treated and will it impact my lifestyle?” Picture from: FE38J9NA/FXDN7IGFE38J9NA.MEDIUM.jpg

RESEARCH SUGGESTIONS Public Library: – Information in medical journals Websites: – – – – Health sections on news websites Local authorities: – Local health officials – Health teacher – People who have had the disease/condition – Doctors Picture from: ommercial%20Litigations/ist2_ _laptop_i n_classic_library%5B1%5D.jpg

RESEARCH SUGGESTIONS Be sure that your research is both valid and reliable Is the information up to date? Is the information submitted by some who would have authority/knowledge in the field? Is the information unbiased? Picture from: pg

AVOID PLAGIARISM Some suggestions to help you avoid plagiarism: 1. Keep good track of your sources/information 2. Anytime a direct quote is used, you MUST cite it. 3. You must use a works cited page. Picture from: rent48.gif

SETTING UP YOUR PAPER Your first paragraph is crucial to setting the tone of an intelligent paper. It is absolutely critical that you grab the readers attention in your opening paragraph. Also, the introductory paragraph is a good spot for your thesis statement. Picture from: 1.jpg

INTRODUCTIONS Your introduction could start with a quote or a statement of fact that may be surprising to readers. Your thesis statement should be a statement of what you will be discussing throughout the paper. Picture from: eviewComp/SuperStock_1557R jpg

SETTING UP YOUR PAPER The body of your paper should include several things: 1. Answers to your burning questions 2. Smooth transitions between paragraphs 3. Completion of the requirements in the rubric Picture from:

TRANSITIONS Three categories of transition words exist: 1. Chronological order – First, meanwhile, later, afterwards, finally, etc. 2. Objects in relation to one another – next to, in front of, beside, between, behind, etc. 3. In order of importance – however, furthermore, as a result, in fact, yet, etc. Picture from: includes/images/pen.jpg

SETTING UP YOUR PAPER Your paper needs to be wrapped up in a neat manner. The concluding paragraph(s) should include a brief summary of the topics you have discussed throughout your paper. You should not introduce new information in your summary. Restate your thesis and how it has been addressed throughout the paper. Picture from:
