There are several methods of getting energy from waves, but one of the most effective works like a swimming pool wave machine in reverse. At a swimming pool, air is blown in and out of a chamber beside the pool, which makes the water outside bob up and down, causing waves.

The wind blows the propellers round, which turns a generator to produce electricity. Many of these towers are together, to make a "wind farm" and produce more electricity. More electricity can be made if there is a lot of wind and a lot of towers.

The Sun is 150 million kilometres away, and amazingly powerful. Just the tiny fraction of the Sun's energy that hits the Earth (around a hundredth of a millionth of a percent) is enough to meet all our power needs many times over.In fact, every minute, enough energy arrives at the Earth to meet our demands for a whole year - if only we could harness it properly. Solar cells convert solar power to electrical energy.

Biomass refers to material which has come from living things, e.g. wood, manure, left- over food. Wood can be burned to release energy. Waste products can be decomposed in a ‘digester’ and the gas produced is methane which can be used for heating and cooking.

Coal is a fossil fuel. It is made from plants that were buried millions of years ago. It is a non-renewable type of energy.

These are formed when animals die and sink to the bottom of lakes, rivers and lagoons. They are covered by sediment and under a lot of heat and pressure for millions of years. They partly decompose and form oil and natural gas.
