ISAT AND MAP ASSESSMENTS THORP SCHOLASTIC ACADEMY SESSION 2: 2/27/2013

HOW IS THE ISAT CHANGING? A.The state is changing how the ISAT is scored by implementing higher expectations for elementary and middle school students under the new Common Core State Standards, which outline the skills and content our students must master at each grade level to continue on the path to college and career readiness (For more information on the Common Core, visit B.The state says that this change is similar to changing a grading scale from where was considered an A to now is considered an A.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO THORP

WHY CHANGE THE SCORING METRIC NOW? Illinois’ previous expectations for our grade 3-8 students did not align to the new learning standards that are now focused on success in college and the workforce. Our high school test, the PSAE, however, includes the ACT and does provide a good indicator of college and career readiness. Therefore, the state is aligning to the ISAT with the PSAE to provide better information about college and career readiness expectations to educators, parents and students in elementary and middle school grades. NWEA has its own College Ready Linking Study.College Ready Linking Study.

WHAT IF MY CHILD’S ISAT SCORES DROP? These new expectations do not mean that our students know less than they did before or are less capable than they were in previous years. Instead, it means that we are raising the bar on how well students are prepared to meet college and career readiness benchmarks. If you have concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school administration. We’ll be able to answer your questions and work with you to create a plan to accelerate your child’s progress and ensure that he or she is ready for college and career by the end of high school. We will know sooner whether or not kids are on track for college and careers. We also will be able to provide the appropriate supports and interventions for students at an earlier point in their academic career, thus boosting a student’s chances for success in college and the workforce.

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE SELECTIVE ENROLLMENT PROCESS AND PROMOTION POLICY AT CPS? NOT THE CPS ANSWER: I expect that SAT 10 will still be used to measure your child compared to other students in CPS. Therefore we expect that the SAT 10 portion of the ISAT test (Session 1 for Reading and Math) will remain the same. Promotion Policy Criteria for grades 3, 6, and 8 – I assume will also remain the same. However, due to the fiscal situation CPS faces we never really know about Summer School until we actually have it.

HOW LONG WILL THE STATE CONTINUE TO USE THE ISAT? The new performance expectations pave the way for the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness of College and Careers) assessments to replace the ISAT in Math and English Language Arts. The transition is scheduled for the school year and will include a computer-based assessment that will provide more timely results. Currently, CPS is using the NWEA MAP Test as a benchmark test to measure student growth. MAP provides timely data, pinpointing a student’s area of strength and weakness for both Math and Reading. At Thorp we use MAP data to help differentiate instructional practices as well as to examine trends in the overall growth of our students.

HOW WILL THE PARCC TESTS DIFFER FROM THE ISAT? The PARCC assessments will align to the Common Core State Standards and will provide information to ensure students are mastering the appropriate skills and content benchmarks for college and careers on an annual basis. Unlike the ISAT, which is given once a year, the PARCC assessment will be administered more than once during the school year. Therefore, teachers will receive real-time information about how well their students are learning. What this will mean for our use of NWEA MAP as a school wide system has still not been determined.

SAMPLE PARCC ASSESSMENTS -We are not sure what the new ISAT PARCC assessment will look like, but a good guess will be that it will have something to do with extended responses for both Math and Reading.
