How Do I Get the Job? Information on how to write a cover letter, resume, and garner recommendation letters.

Objectives  Learn what is included in a complete resume packet  Learn how to write an individualized cover letter  Learn tips on completing applications  Learn what to include in a resume  Learn who to ask for letters of recommendation and what they should contain

A Resume Packet Contains:  Cover Letter  Application  Resume  Three Letters of Recommendation  Additional requested documents

Cover Letter 1. Introduce yourself. 2. Describe why you have chosen to apply for the job. 3. State your case for why this organization should hire you. 4. Should be clear and to the point.

Online Applications  If applications are not on-line, call or the Human Resources Office and pick one up in person.  Complete and submit job applications

A Resume should… Be brief and to the point Target important information Use effective communication Be organized and flow smoothly Be factual and 100% honest

A good resume doesn’t get you the job… but it does get you an interview!

Resume Tips  The purpose of the resume is to show that you are a qualified candidate for the job.  Use short statements, not full sentences.  Start every sentence with an action verb.  Ways to highlight include material:  Use bold, italics and/or all capital letters.

Resume Tips  Be sure that your name stands out.  Use a font size no less than ten.  Off white, light blue, gray and buff paper are fine. Always use black ink.  Put the most attractive elements to a potential employer at the top of your resume.  Use rich vocabulary.

How to Write an Exceptional Resume  Revise the resume and cover letter to fit the specific job for which you are applying.  Include your significant contributions at each of your previous positions.  Be factual and 100% honest.  Allow the most space for the experience that is most relevant to the position for which you are applying.

How to Write an Exceptional Resume  List references on the resume.  Give each of your references a copy of your resume.  Send a brief customized cover letter with each resume.  Re-read your resume before each interview.

Show your creative side…  Resumes are evolving  Online resume samples    Allows students to show their creative side and ability to “think outside the box” to potential employers

Letters of Recommendation  Provide with a copy of your updated resume to writer  Excellent sources for letters:  Teachers  Counselors  Coaches  Former employers

Letters of Recommendation  Maintain original copies for your personal files.  Letters should be:  Specific in the information provided  Typed on letterhead  Dated and signed by the reference provider
