What is Myoelectric Prosthesis? Prosthesis controlled from electric signals Signals are sent from muscles and received by receptors Prosthetic limb converts signals into a command
3 Different Prosthesis Shoulder Elbow Hand/Wrist Myoelectric elbows allow for much more control with continuous adjustment capability, allowing the user to position the hand where he would like. Can also be locked to hold more weight or unlocked to hold something lighter. Balanced for natural like movement Wrist make gripping things much easier, lots of flexion and extension increments, resistance, and 360 degree rotation that can stop in multiple positoins. As for the hand it comes with a glove that is skin like, can hold an egg, has sensors that can respond to friction and adjust grip on something, and a lot more functions that have previously never been seen in a prosthesis
Studies Comparison of body powered prosthesis to myoelectric prosthesis Machine learning for myoelectric prosthesis control
Results No real advantage between myoelectric or body powered prosthesis could be determined
Results The adaptive switching with the myoelectric prosthesis was found to be much more effective
Conclusion Allow for greater range of use in prosthesis Greater cosmetic value Myoelectric prosthesis are more expensive Less practical to wear around With technological advancements continuing they have the potential to revolutionize the world of prosthesis as we see it
