Common Chemicals Vocabulary

Ammonium hydroxide Ammonia - household cleaner Should never be mixed with any other cleaner! Will create dangerous and TOXIC fumes.

Calcium chloride Road and sidewalk salt. To keep roads from freezing over.

Ethylene glycol Anti-freeze for cars and automobiles. Prevents liquids from getting to hot or too cold (and freezing) Very POISONOUS! if swallowed. Keep away from pets and small children.

Herbicides Kill weeds and plants.

Insecticides Kill insects. Examples are flea and tick medicines for pets, ant and roach motels, bug sprays

Pesticides Kills unwanted pests. Could kill rodents (mice and rats), moles, fungi, mold.

Sodium hypochlorite Household bleach Used for disinfecting and sterilizing, other household cleaning.

Sodium tetraborate Also known as "Borax"...used to clean laundry.
