Definitions, Parts of Speech, and Example Sentences Vocabulary list 8 Definitions, Parts of Speech, and Example Sentences

To Cauterize (verb) DEF: To make insensible (by burning or freezing). RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: Cauterization, noun EX. SENTENCE: “Something was killed in your breast, burnt out, cauterized out.”

To Prevaricate (verb) DEF: To be deliberately ambiguous or unclear in order to mislead or withhold information. To deviate from the truth RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: Prevarication, noun EX. SENTENCE: During the hearings the witness was willing to prevaricate in order to protect his friend, even though he was under oath to tell the whole truth.

To Writhe (verb) DEF: To react to pain by moving and twisting about uncontrollably. RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: n/a EX. SENTENCE: Winston could see Julia on the floor, writhing in pain from the blow to her stomach.

Premonitory (Adj.) DEF: Warning of future misfortune RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: Premonitorily, adv. EX. SENTENCES: The volcano created a tremble in the earth, which some scientists believe is a premonitory sign of an inevitable catastrophic eruption.

To Grovel (Verb) DEF: To show submission or fear. To cower. RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: n/a EX. SENTENCE: “He felt the smash of truncheons on his elbows and iron-shod boots on his shins; he saw himself groveling on the floor, screaming for mercy through broken teeth.”

Sanctimonious (Adj) DEF: Excessively or hypocritically pious or devout. RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: Sanctimoniously, adv. Sanctimoniousness, noun EX. SENTENCE: Some politicians sanctimoniously criticize others for engaging in immoral activity while themselves engaging in such activities in private.

Malleable (Adj) DEF: Easily influence or shaped. RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: Malleability, noun EXAMPLE SENTENCE: The Party takes advantage of the malleability of people in order to shape them to believe exactly what the Party wants them to believe.

Sinecure (noun) DEF: An office or position (normally a government job) that requires little or no work but provides enough income to live. RELATED PARTS OF SPEECH: n/a EX. SENTENCE: In order to keep his opponents quiet, the ruler gave them sinecures for which they would be indebted to him.
