Using Quotes Effectively Why use quotes in your writing? Your writing should be your own words with your own thoughts, but using quotes can help: – Add authority by showing that you are presenting informed opinions – Show how you arrived at a particular thought of your own

Using Quotes Effectively A good open response will often include: 1.Your own thoughts about something you have read or an issue you are studying. 2.Quotes to support your response 3.Reflection or analysis of the quote

Using Quotes Effectively Think of it like a sandwich – The bread on the outside is your own thoughts – The quote is the meat in the middle A little meat goes a long way so keep your quote short. Don’t use more than you need.

Step One: Thesis (Claim) Let’s look at Martin Luther King’s use of imagery in his “I Have a Dream” speech. My thesis: – In his “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King used imagery to help the audience visualize a country that is free from racism. This is the top layer of bread since this is my opinion.

Step Two: Support Now that I have laid out my thesis, I need some evidence. Let’s find a quote to support my opinion. In the speech, Dr. King dreams of a country where people “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Note that the contains words in front to help make the quote fit my sentence better. This is the meat to my sandwich.

Step Three: Analyze Now that I have made my claim and supported it with a quote, I have to explain it with a sentence or two. – By this, he shows that he believes all people should be judged by their merits, not something as arbitrary as their skin color. This powerful image surely made an impact on his audience and has been remembered for many years.

Example: In his “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King used imagery to help the audience visualize a country that is free from racism.
