Unit 9 Is There Life on Earth Wang Duqin

What do you know about pollution Type of pollution The seriousnes s and the cause of pollution

What can you say about cars? Crash into each other Emit waste gases Traffic jams

How serious is our pollution?  This text illustrates how serious pollution is on earth in a humorous way.  Read and find how serious it is.  Can you find one sentence to express how serious it is? Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.

What type of pollution is mentioned in the text?  Air pollution  The atmosphere is filled with certain carbon monoxide and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe  Water pollution  It is polluted and the water is unfit to drink  Noise pollution  emit gases and make noise

What are the causes of pollution?  Cars:  emit gases and make noise

What do they refer to?  Solid concrete in line 16  Metal particles in line 32  Stalagmite projections in line 36  Granite formations in line

Read and complete  Press Conference  Place: ____________  Time: ____________  Attendees: _____________  Issue: ____________________  Conclusion: _______________________  Reasons: (1)____________ (2) ___________ (3) ___________ (4) ____________ (5) _____________

For reference  Place: _________________________  Time: __________________________  Attendees: _____________________  Issue: _________________________  Conclusion: _____________________ The Venus Institute of Technology This week Prof. Zog; the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star The feasibility of a manned flying saucer landing on Earth The flying saucer program will be set back several years Postpone the program for several years Whether it is feasible to land a manned flying saucer on Earth

Reasons (1) The area of Manhataan is composed of solid concrete and nothing can grow there, (2) The atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe and survive (3) The consolidated Edison Belt will give them a lot of trouble. (4) The water is polluted and unfit to drink. (5) There are so many metal particles that it is impossible to land a flying saucer without its being smashed by one They have to take their own oxygen. They have to take their own water It is dangerous.

How to express?  When you are not sure whether you should use an expression to put something  Over there you will notice what seems to be a river  To emphasize something/say it is the most …  If we can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere

Can you try?  After _______________________, he appeared.(You are not sure whether you have waited for ten hours.)  How to spend _________________(they say it is holiday, but you do not think so).  Looking at __________________, he couldn’t help thinking of his childhood.(he was not sure whether he should call it a bird) what seemed to be ten hours what they call holiday what seemed to be a bird

Can you try?  Beijing is the most crowded city  If you can travel freely in Beijing, you can in any city.  Flats are the most expensive in Beijing.  If you can afford a flat in Beijing, you can buy one in any city.  Big Jim is the least cooperative.  If you can work with Big Jim, you can work with anyone.  Mr. Wang is the most committed teacher.  If Mr. Wang is not a committed teacher, no one else is

Fill in the blanks  Scientists on Venus are discussing the ____1___ of landing a manned flying saucer on Earth, based on ___2___ received from a satellite. Their ___3___ are that the planet Earth is unfit for habitation because of its highly ____4___ condition. ____5___, deadly gases in the atmosphere make it extremely dangerous to breathe. For another, the water, __6____ polluted, has become undrinkable. ____7___ it would be difficult for anyone to survive on Earth. ___8___ the flying saucer program will be set back under these conditions, ___9___ the Venusian scientists are determined to ____10___ with their exploration of the planet Earth

Fill in the blanks  Scientists on Venus are discussing the feasibility of landing a manned flying saucer on Earth, based on information received from a satellite. Their conclusions are that the planet Earth is unfit for habitation because of its highly polluted condition. For one thing, deadly gases in the atmosphere make it extremely dangerous to breathe. For another, the water, also polluted, has become undrinkable. For these reasons, it would be difficult for anyone to survive on Earth. Undoubtedly the flying saucer program will be set back under these conditions, but the Venusian scientists are determined to proceed with their exploration of the planet Earth

What should we do?  BEIJING — The Chinese government said Thursday that it had set a target to slow the growth of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, aiming to reduce so- called carbon intensity by 40 to 45 percent compared with 2005 levels even as its economy grows, according to Xinhua, the state news agency
