Campus Security Authority Training What Are Your Responsibilities? Last Updated: August 2013

Why does this apply to me? O Within your position at California Lutheran University, you are considered a Campus Security Authority, as defined in the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. O Your frequent interaction with students at CLU requires that you obtain this training.

Why does CLU have Campus Security Authorities? O CLU is required to disclose “statistics concerning the occurrence of certain criminal offenses reported to local law enforcement agencies or any official of the institution who is defined as a ‘Campus Security Authority’. O This information is reported to the U.S. Department of Education annually by means of the Campus Security and Fire Life Safety Report.

Who is responsible for gathering and reporting these statistics? O The responsibility to gather and report this information belongs to Campus Public Safety. O As a Campus Security Authority all you have to do is report it to Campus Public Safety.

What is a Campus Security Authority? O “An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings.” O Examples include: O Dean of Students O Club and Organization Advisors O Director of Athletics

Who is considered a Campus Security Authority at CLU? O Vice President of Student Affairs/Dean of Students O Director of Student Life O Director of Health Services O Director of Multicultural and International Programs O Director of Counseling Services O Campus Ministries when acting as an advisor or overseer of student clubs or organizations O Human Resources O Residence Life and Residence Hall Staff O Department Deans or other senior student administrative personnel O Coaches and assistant coaches O Overseers and advisors to student clubs and organizations O Other campus officials who have "significant responsibility for student and campus activities”. These include: student housing, student discipline and campus judicial proceedings.

What do I need to report? O Murder/non-negligent manslaughter, negligent manslaughter O Sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible) O Robbery O Aggravated assault O Burglary O Motor vehicle theft O Arson

What do I need to report? O Liquor law violations O Drug abuse violations O Weapons violations, including carrying and possessing O Bias-related (hate) crimes for the following offenses: murder/non-negligent manslaughter, sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, larceny-theft, vandalism, intimidation, simple assault, and damage/destruction/vandalism of property.

Does it matter where an incident occurs? O Yes- CLU is required to disclose statistics for offenses that occur on campus, in or on non-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by CLU, and public property within or immediately adjacent to our campuses.

What do I include in my report to Campus Safety? O Date of the incident O Location of where the incident occurred O Brief description of the incident

Does CLU notify anyone else other than the Department of Education? O CLU has a responsibility to notify the campus community about any crimes which pose an ongoing threat to the community, and, as such, campus security authorities are obligated by law to report crimes to Campus Public Safety. O Even if you are not sure whether an ongoing threat exists, immediately contact Campus Public Safety.

Additional Questions? O If you have any questions about being a Campus Security Authority, contact the Director of Campus Public Safety, Fred Miller, at (805)
