CNY Project CHARACTER* …is based on successful grants created by Dr. Carroll awarded by the USDE Character Education Program for Harlem (2002—07) and Yonkers (2008—present) Public Schools

CNY Project CHARACTER* …will be a scientifically- based study to demonstrate that the successes achieved in large urban districts can be replicated among city, rural suburban, and nonpublic school districts.

CHARACTER C itizenship and H igh A cademic standards, R einforcing the A spen C haracter T raits, and E thical R easoning

CNY Project CHARACTER* …is designed to supplement, not supplant, any school’s existing character education program and requires no additional expenses (other than perhaps substitutes for 5 teachers per district on 4 release day workshops)

C ITIZENSHIP The Character Education Public Policy Analyst: Define (1) schoolwide, (2) classroom & (3) curriculum social problems & develop new public policy solutions

H igh A cademic standards CEPPA & PPA & character ed will promote academic improvement.

R einforcing the A SPEN C haracter T raits respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring justice & fairness civic virtue & citizenship

E thical R easoning Using analysis and technology to solve our school’s problems and create a caring environment

The four CRITICAL objectives of Project CHARACTER may be summarized as: (1) Curriculum Restructuring to focus on the Six Pillars of Character—respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, justice and fairness, and civic virtue and citizenship—in all content courses and on school- wide social problems,

School Leadership Teams (LT) Building Principal Five Highly Respected Teachers A Concerned Parent

LT Members will lead their school committees in using the CEPPA

LT Members’ role is described in the CHARACTER Handbook CHARACTER Handbook

The CEPPA addresses these school social problems… (a) discipline problems (b) students’ grades (c) participation in extracurricular activities (d) parental and community involvement (e) faculty and administration involvement (f) student and staff morale

If we all work together as a team… …then CHARACTER will achieve its goals and objectives in our four target schools
