Presentation transcript:

 The word “antisemitism” was coined in 1879 in Germany, in an attempt to define anti-Jewish sentiment on a scientific basis.

 It justified Jews as a different people, nation, and later race, that threatens the mere existence of the national unity and the national state.

 Gradually antisemitism became a political ideology embraced by political parties and organizations that were determined to protest the so-called “Jewish influence” in political, social, economic, and cultural life.

 Nazi ideology used elements of traditional antisemitism, although it mainly centered on racist antisemitism, which portrayed Jews as an inferior and destructive race.

 Nazis believed in the “purity of the blood,” which guaranteed a “superior” race.  According to their view, any mixing of blood would lead to the destruction of the so-called master race, the Germanic people of northern Europe— Nordic Aryans.

 Nazi ideology did not recognize the Jewish people as human beings, but rather portrayed them as subhuman through propaganda.  Propaganda is information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.

 How does it work? Repeats the same information over and over. Twists and exploits the truth. Appeals to people’s emotions. Gives the illusion that most people agree with the message. Talks to people in their own language. Uses accessible media (newspaper, radio, etc.)

 Dur St ürmer is the most infamous antisemitic newspaper in history.  Beginning in 1923, every weekly issue denounced Jews in crude, vicious, and vivid ways for 22 years.

 The paper’s publisher and editor was Julius Streicher, a Nazi German.  His goal was to capture the attention of the masses.  By 1925, he realized that cartoons and photographs could be absorbed faster than a written article.

 He hired the cartoonist Philipp Rupprect (pen name Fips), who went on to draw thousands of anti-Jewish caricatures for the paper.  Streicher was hanged in 1946 as a war criminal. His last words were “Hail, Hitler!”

 Create a comic strip in which a character uses elements of propaganda to persuade a group on a topic.  Must be at least 5 panels.  Keep it appropriate (nothing offensive).
