CHAPTER 1 LESSON 5 Food Making

Words to Know  Photosynthesis- the process by which plants produce food.  Chlorophyll- the green matter in plants that traps light used to produce food.

Food Making ingredients  Plants need three things to make food.  Carbon dioxide- which enters the plants through the stomates.  Water- which enters the plant through tubes from the roots to the stems into the leaves.  Light- which gets trapped in the leaves by chlorophyll

The Food Making Process  1. light is trapped by the chlorophyll in the leaf, and water is carried to the leaf by tubes.  2. inside the leaf the light breaks down water into hydrogen and oxygen, and carbon dioxide enters through the stomates.  3. the hydrogen and carbon dioxide combine to make food and the oxygen leaves through the stomates.
