Scholarships May be for academic, athletic, leadership, music, theater, etc. Usually competitiveInstitutionalNational State and Local including civic organizations

Institutional scholarships:  Given by the college/university to attract quality students  Fixed; can only be used at the school awarding the scholarship National scholarships:  Given by companies & organizations on a national level  May be portable or fixed State and local scholarships:  Given by businesses, organizations and/or religious affiliates in your community  May be portable or fixed

Scholarships can be awarded for:  Academic achievement  Athletic ability  Artistic talent  Ethnicity  Religion  Gender  Sexual Orientation  College Major  Extracurricular involvements (community service, leadership, etc.)

 Make sure you match the criteria for each scholarship you apply for  Use Naviance as a search tool—it does the searching for you!  Universities will award scholarships to applicable students that are enrolled in their school  No scholarship is too small to be worth applying for!

Many scholarships require a written essay to complete the application.  Understand the purpose of writing the essay  Research the organization  Create goals for the essay  Develop an outline  Proofread, proofread, proofread

What is it? The Common Local Scholarship Application allows you to apply for any of 20+ local scholarships using ONE application rather than having to complete many separate applications with many different deadlines. These are scholarships that ONLY Leyden students can apply for and ONLY Leyden students will receive.

 AVAILABLE: After winter break on the homepage of the Leyden website ( and on the Student Services website  DUE: Tuesday, February 16, 2016 to Ms. Jablonska in the Counselors’ Office (late applications will NOT be accepted!)

 Meet all your deadlines!  Do not pay for information or to fill out a scholarships  Apply for scholarships using Leyden’s Common Local Scholarship Application  Complete your FAFSA to receive more aid & remember you’ll be filing the FAFSA again next October!  Schedule an appointment to meet with Gina Widmer, our ISAC rep, to receive FREE assistance with scholarships and financial aid
