What is a screen presentation? A presentation can take several forms  A set of 35mm slides projected onto a screen  A set of transparencies shown using an OHP  A series of screens viewed on a monitor  A series of screens viewed on a projection system. Each of these has its advantages and disadvantages. Consider them, especially in terms of technological dependence and quality control.

What is the purpose of a presentation?  A presentation can be designed for a variety of purposes such as:  to accompany a speaker  to provide information on demand via a network  to act as point of sale marketing tool  to deliver educational material  to entertain  The “look and feel” of your design will depend on the purpose or intent of your presentation.

What is the presentation audience?  A presentation can be designed for a variety of audiences such as:  prospective clients  students  casual passers-by  conference delegates  exhibition visitors  Your design will vary according to the audience for the presentation.  Consider their motivation and interest

Presentation hardware Presentations don’t have to involve computers. You can use  A 35mm slide projector  An overhead projector with transparencies  An overhead projector with “data panel”  A portable self contained computer projection system  A fixed computer projection system  A kiosk type computer system Relevant Graphic? ---> Presentation Hardmanware

Why use a presentation?  To keep the audience interested  To highlight key points  To simplify a message  To advertise or inform  To grab attention

A presentation is NOT for:  Showing detailed information  Replacing printed documents  Showing interactive information  Showing non-linear information (Powerpoint can do these things but there are better ways such as html)  In this unit we are concerned only with linear presentations.

Who could use presentation software?  Teachers  Students  Sales people  Marketing people  Political speakers  Community groups  Conference presenters Bald person presents to bald audience on hair loss -----^ You do not need to be bald any more!

The rule of 5 to 8  Information is best understood if it is in sets of about 5 to 8 items.  When you have more than that, subdivide.  See for examples: Restaurant menus Computer program menus Contents pages of books Some presenters suggest that there should be about 5 to 8 words in a bullet point but that depends on your purpose and audience.
