Gathering Weather Data SWBAT recognize the importance of accurate weather data; describe the technology used to collect weather data; analyze the strengths and weaknesses of weather observation systems

Surface Data  What 4 atmospheric variables do meteorologists measure to predict weather? –Temperature –Air pressure –Wind –Relative Humidity

Surface Data  Thermometer –Used to measure temperature  Barometer –Measure air pressure  Anemometer –Measure wind speed  Hygrometer –Measure relative humidity  Ceilometers –Measure height of clouds and estimates cloud cover

Upper-Level Data  Radiosonde –Sensors that measure temperature, air pressure, and humidity in the upper levels. –Sent up on a balloon to record data.

Weather Radar  Doppler Effect –A change in the wave frequency that occurs in energy, such as sound and light, as it moves toward or away from an observer.

With a partner  Based on what you have read, determine the strengths and weaknesses of weather observation systems. Discuss it with a partner and record your ideas.

With a partner  Answer questions 1-5 on page 316.  Be sure to answer in all questions in complete sentences.  If you don’t finish in class, complete for homework.
