Gathering Weather Data SWBAT recognize the importance of accurate weather data; describe the technology used to collect weather data; analyze the strengths and weaknesses of weather observation systems
Surface Data What 4 atmospheric variables do meteorologists measure to predict weather? –Temperature –Air pressure –Wind –Relative Humidity
Surface Data Thermometer –Used to measure temperature Barometer –Measure air pressure Anemometer –Measure wind speed Hygrometer –Measure relative humidity Ceilometers –Measure height of clouds and estimates cloud cover
Upper-Level Data Radiosonde –Sensors that measure temperature, air pressure, and humidity in the upper levels. –Sent up on a balloon to record data.
Weather Radar Doppler Effect –A change in the wave frequency that occurs in energy, such as sound and light, as it moves toward or away from an observer.
