WEATHER I Wind

WIND  Caused by air pressure and temperature differences.  Moves from H to L  Horizontal movement of air

WIND/WEATHER HAPPENS BECAUSE OF…

HOW DO WE MEASURE WIND?  Anemometer- tool used to measure wind speed. Cups catch the wind and record speed.

LOCAL WINDS- WINDS OVER A SHORT DISTANCE  (Land/Water) heats faster _________ (denser molecules)  As land heats the air rises and colder air comes in to replace it.  Sea Breeze- breeze coming from ocean/water to land (during the day)  Land Breeze- winds moving from land to water (generally in evenings)

MONSOON  - Land and Sea breezes that change direction with the seasons.

GLOBAL WINDS- STEADY WINDS FROM A LONG DISTANCE AND SPECIFIC DIRECTION. Caused by temperature changes between the poles and equator. Seasonal changes (amount of sunlight and heat) at various locations affect global winds.

CORIOLIS EFFECT- GLOBAL WIND CURVE CAUSED BY THE ROTATION OF THE EARTH

JET STREAM- BANDS OF HIGH SPEED WINDS IN THE STRATOSPHERE

BILL NYE- WIND

BEAUFORT WIND SCALE

BEAUFORT SCALE ASSIGN Obj: Create/Design your own version of the Beaufort scale. You must have a title for your scale (2 pts) You must have a range of numbers (at least 5) (2 pts) You must include a wind speed category (2 pts) You must include an observation category (2 pts) You must include a colored picture for each category of wind speed (4 pts) Neatness/organization of design (2 pts) Bonus points will be awarded for highly artistic or creative scales. *A theme might be a great way to earn some bonus points!

CANIS WIND SCALE Wind scaleWind speed (mph)DescriptionPicture 0Under 1 mphNo movement of dog fur, ears at rest 11-5 mphSlight movement of fur mphLight flapping of ears with breeze mphEars flipped back due to wind, fur rustling across body

WEATHER II- PRECIPITATION  Water evaporates into the air from water surfaces and living things  It returns to the surface as Precipitation  Warmer air can hold more moisture  Clouds condense to form drops

ASSIGNMENT YOU are a drop of water…(you can be wherever you want)…Write a diary describing your journey through the water cycle. How do you become a cloud? What type of conditions cause you to fall as precipitation? What form of precipitation are you? ½-1 pg. BE creative, and descriptive. This can be funny or serious…you decide. You have minutes! Be prepared to share. *Use pg. 545 to help you.

 Precipitation- any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches the surface.

PRECIPITATION CAN COME IN MANY FORMS

HOW DO WE MEASURE RAIN?  Rain gauge- tool used to collect and measure rainfall  Ruler- tool used to measure snow

RAIN SHADOW  Windward side gets rain as clouds lift to go over mountains.  Leeward side is generally dryer

ASSIGNMENT  1) Read pgs in the red book  2) Take notes on the various forms of precipitation (rain, sleet, freezing rain, hail and snow.) Add these to your existing notes on precipitation.

WEATHER III (HUMIDITY, CLOUDS) Humidity- amount of ___________________ in the air Warm air can hold more water than cold air (it’s less dense) moisture This is what we are doing for our lab! PAY ATTENTION

SPECIFIC HUMIDITY  Amount of moisture in the air  Warmer air holds more moisture

RELATIVE HUMIDITY  Comparison of specific humidity to maximum amount of that the air can hold.

PSYCHROMETER  Tool used to measure humidity. It compares air temp of a dry bulb with the temp of a wet bulb.

CLOUDS  High fog, mist or haze  Cloud shapes relate to air movement   Stratiform  Cumuliform WARNING…this might bring a tear to your eye…clouds are beautiful.

3 TYPES OF CLOUDS  1) Cirrus- thin, feathery, very high altitude; made of ice crystals  2) Cumulus- thick, puffy, rising air (usually warm) vertical air  3) Stratus- low sheets of clouds, layers, horizontal air
