Chapter 13 Solving Laptop Problems Prepared by: Khurram N. Shamsi

Introduction What is a Laptop? A laptop is a personal computer designed for mobile use. It is small in size and light in weight.

Introduction The inside of an IBM ThinkPad

Introduction

Features of a Laptop A laptop is much smaller and lighter than even the most compact PC tower. The monitor and keyboard of a laptop is an integrated part of the unit. The components of a laptop fit into a compact space. It conserves power. It produce less heat than desktop components

Features of Laptop Processors Runs at a lower voltage and clock speed Mounts to the motherboard without using pins Has a sleep or slow-down mode

Laptop Memory Laptops often use smaller memory modules to save space.

Types of Memory used in Laptops Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (SODIMM) Dual Data Rate Synchronous RAM (DDR SDRAM) Single data rate Synchronous RAM (SDRAM) Proprietary memory modules

Hard Drives used in Laptops Hot swappable  The computer can stay on while changing the drive. Warm swappable  The computer can stay on while changing the drive, but the corresponding bus (the path the drive uses to send data to the CPU) must be inactive. Cold swappable  The computer must be off during the swap.

Laptop Screen and Graphics A laptop uses a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to generate graphics. A laptop displays its graphics on a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. Most screens of the laptops measure between 10 and 17 inches

Types of Laptop Batteries Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad)  These batteries were the first type of battery commonly used in laptop computers. Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)  These batteries are the bridge between NiCad and the newer Lithium-Ion (LiIon) batteries. LiIon batteries  These are the current standard for laptop computers.
