Lesson 36: Photosynthesis/POGIL Quiz DO NOW: (5 minutes) Take out Photosynthesis Gizmo and What’s in a Leaf POGIL. Describe the effect of CO2, light intensity, and temperature on photosynthesis. HOMEWORK: 1. Complete STUDY GUIDE FOR ENERGY IN THE CELLS TEST. DUE WEDNESDAY 2. Photosynthesis/Respiration Test FRIDAY (10/30/15) Today’s Plan: Do Now Quiz Photosynthesis Handout Why do leaves usually appear green instead of orange or yellow? Why does chlorophyll break down in the autumn? 4. Start Study Guide/Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to Communicate our knowledge of how photosynthesis transforms light energy into stored chemical energy on an assessment. Predict the path of reactants and products of photosynthesis through a leaf.

Do Now Describe the effect of CO2, light intensity, and temperature on photosynthesis. -Light Intensity/CO2 increases photosynthesis to a certain point, then levels off. -Extreme high/low temperatures denature enzymes and slow down photosynthesis

Photosynthesis

Closure The rate of photosynthesis can be measured by observing the production of what gas? Explain why the color of the leaves change in the winter.

Lesson 37: Photosynthesis/Respiration Models DO NOW: (5 minutes) What is the difference between light energy and chemical energy? Give examples. Take out your homework. HOMEWORK: Photosynthesis/Respiration Test FRIDAY (10/30/15) Today’s Plan: Do Now Quiz Photosynthesis Handout Why do leaves usually appear green instead of orange or yellow? Why does chlorophyll break down in the autumn? 4. Start Study Guide/Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to 1. Develop a model that explains our knowledge of photosynthesis and respiration.

Do Now What is the difference between light energy and chemical energy? Give examples. Light energy- energy from the sun Chemical energy- energy from ATP molecules

Research- Develop a model that includes the main ideas of your topic. Aerobic Respiration Anaerobic Respiration (alcoholic and lactic acid) Photosynthesis Parts of the Leaf ATP Photosynthesis and Respiration Relationship

Model- 15 points 5 Points- Presentations- Eye contact, audible, clear, everyone speaks, energetic 5 Points- Model- neat, organized, title should fit topic, visuals with captions, evidence, description about topic 5 Points- Information- accurate, relevant, not missing the main ideas Model Criteria from 7th Grade:

Closure Review your study guides, what questions do you have?

Lesson 39: Model Presentations DO NOW: (5 minutes) Take out your study guide. With your lab group, take 5 minutes to finish your poster and plan how you will present your topic to the class. HOMEWORK: Photosynthesis/Respiration Test FRIDAY (10/30/15) Today’s Plan: Do Now Model Presentations Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to 1. Present our model that explains our knowledge of photosynthesis and respiration. 2. Communicate the main ideas of photosynthesis and respiration.

Aerobic Respiration What is the equation for aerobic respiration? Reactants? Products? What is needed for aerobic respiration to take place? Where in the cell does glycolysis take place? Where in the cell does aerobic respiration take place? What organelle does aerobic respiration occur in? When does respiration occur?

Anaerobic Respiration Which type of cellular respiration produced more energy? Why? Why doesn’t glycolysis occur in the mitochondria? Under what conditions would muscle cells use fermentation for energy instead of aerobic respiration? What organisms go through cellular respiration?

Photosynthesis Identify the steps in photosynthesis and when each product is produced. Explain why leaves change in the fall. If a tree has lost its leaves, what does it use for energy in the winter? What organisms go through photosynthesis?

Parts of the Leaf How does capillary action aid in photosynthesis? What is the equation for photosynthesis? Reactants? Products? How do all parts of a leaf aid in the process of photosynthesis: xylem, phloem, palisade layer, spongy layer, guard cells, stoma, lower epidermis, upper epidermis, and waxy layer. What is the function of chlorophyll? Compare chloroplast vs. chlorophyll.

ATP What are the three parts of an ATP molecule? How are ATP and ADP different in terms of potential energy? Structure? How is the energy released from a molecule of ATP? Distinguish between autotrophs and heterotrophs. Give examples of each. What organelle makes ATP?

Photosynthesis and Respiration Relationship What is the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration?

Closure Why does the spongy mesophyll have a lot of air space in it? Make sure you mention what moves through this layer while explaining your answer.

Lesson 40: Cross Section of a Leaf DO NOW: (5 minutes) Where do gasses enter and exit a leaf? Correct your HW with the answer key. HOMEWORK: 1. Study for the Photosynthesis/Respiration Test FRIDAY (10/30/15) Today’s Plan: Do Now Microscopes Explain the path of the reactants and products of photosynthesis through a leaf. What part of the leaf is involved in gas exchange? 3. Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to Identify the layers of a leaf by looking at a cross section under the microscope.
