ML: Close Readers analyze the narrator’s thoughts, words, and actions to draw conclusions about his/her point of view. (RL.6.1, RL.6.3, RL.6.6, W.6.4; DOK4, DOK3)

U2-R6: Point of View Connection Lesson Vocabulary point of view narrator inferences responses challenges Today, we continue our thinking about Moon Shadow and how he is acclimating to his “new life” in America. We begin to make observations about how Yep develops Moon Shadow’s point of view, by paying attention to his thoughts, words, and actions.

Model…identifying point of view Point of View = how we see the world or feel about a subject/topic (chart) Positive: Neutral: Negative: What does Moon Shadow think about the “Land of the Golden Mountain” and the demons that live there? Watch how I identify TBD (thoughts, words, and/or actions) to show the technique that Yep uses to convey Moon Shadow’s point of view.

Subject/Topic Technique (actions, words, thoughts) & TBE Point of View Inference The Land of the Golden Mountain Pg. 1-2 – NARRATOR’S THOUGHTS Moon Shadow shares with “us” some of the good and bad details about what is in The Land of the Golden Mountains. Pg.7-8 – NARRATOR’S CONVERSATION Moon Shadow (narrator/main character) tells “us” that he asks questions about the “The Land of the Golden Mountain”…then has the conversation with Grandmother. Even though Moon Shadow is being given “negative” information about The Land of the Golden Mountains from his grandmother, his point of view is neutral. It seems that even though he is nervous about learning of it, he is too curious not to ask questions…it’s like knowing something is wrong but still too interested in it to not do it.

Active Work… Turn & Talk with your team… What is another TBD that Yep uses to show Moon Shadow’s point of view the “Land of the Golden Mountain” and the demons that live there? Detail: Inference: This makes us think…

Quick Assessment (DOK3) How did Yep develop Moon Shadow’s point of view of the “Land of the Golden Mountain” and the demons that live there? He used similes and metaphors to create point of view. He used the character’s inner thoughts to develop the point of view. He used problems and solutions to develop the character’s point-of-view. He told the reader exactly how Moon Shadow felt about this land.
