The Role of Professional Bodies in Translating Research into Management Practice  Title

Collaboration: a route to greater impact  Collaborative research  Facilitating the transfer of knowledge  Professional management and leadership development routes for staff  Enhance student employability  Celebrating good practice and leading thinking: “Management Gold” ̶ Management Book of the Year ̶ Management Articles of the Year

CMI Management Book of the Year in association with the British Library  Objectives: ̶ Recognise and reward great management writing ̶ Get more people reading management books ̶ Inspire and empower managers  Growing success – now have lead sponsor: Henley Business School  £5,000 prize for overall winner: recognition for 5 category winners

Management Articles of the Year  An online knowledge transfer ‘market place’  Practising managers (CMI’s membership) as reviewers to rate the articles and contribute short supplementary comments  An annual collection of the top rated research articles from of UK business schools and universities assessed for relevance and clarity of writing by practitioners

Partners

Objectives  Assist universities in disseminating their research to a wider audience  Help researchers demonstrate impact  Raise the profile of management research with managers and employers  Benefit practising managers by providing them with insights from accessible, leading edge knowledge from UK universities

The Process  Annual call for submissions – deadline 31 October 2012  Only academics accredited to UK universities may contribute an article  CMI Members rate and review articles online  CMI’s Academic Advisory Council quality assure high rated articles  Promotion and publication of top articles

Top Management Articles

Dissemination  All articles and reviews can be freely viewed and downloaded by anyone via CMI’s website  Highly rated articles will be available via: ̶ CMI’s ManagementDirect portal to CMI members and employers ̶ British Library Management & Business Studies Portal  “Brainbox” - regular column in Professional Manager (circulation 100,000+)  Researchers can join CMI’s free online community to discuss their research

Management Articles of the Year

Do’s and Don’ts  Do: ̶ Make sure you have copyright clearance ̶ Use a short title (6-8 words) ̶ Have something to say (a clear conclusion to the research question) ̶ Provide practical insights ̶ Express ideas clearly ̶ Contextualise the findings (e.g. case studies) ̶ Use ‘plain language’ whenever possible  Don’t: ̶ Raise lots of questions without providing the answers ̶ Explain how complex the issue is (practitioners know this already!) ̶ Long passages about research methodology ̶ Jargon, neologisms or excessively abstract language

Key Questions  What more can we do to encourage researchers and academics to submit articles?  What can BAM, CMI and others do to raise the profile and impact of the scheme?
