It is now both moral and practical to intentionally address the gaps How does this lens shape your teaching and the culture of your school community? How might it define your priorities and the conversation about teaching and learning, particularly in PLCs?

BUILDING A SHARED LANGUAGE culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) “is a way of teaching used to empower students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by use of cultural references that impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes” (Ladson-Billings, 1992). CRP rests upon the assumption that students learn best when their learning styles, cultural practices, and language background are congruent with the curriculum and instruction they receive in schools (Cochran-Smith, 2001).

BUILDING A SHARED LANGUAGE Read the article or excerpt Write one key idea per post-it note Bring post-it notes together and classify Determine key elements and considerations of culturally responsive pedagogy

CULTURAL CONGRUITY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING Learning Styles Dimensions (Procedural, Communicative, Substantive, Environmental, Organizational, Perceptual, Relational, Motivational) Cultural Self-Study Cooperative Learning Active and Affective Engagement Rituals and Routines Choice and Authenticity

FOR EXAMPLE… “Readers need to encounter both windows and mirrors. All readers need window-books they can look through, discovering whole other worlds…but children also need mirrors, who create characters and situations that reflect students’ real lives. In these books, kids immediately see themselves, and they feel: this is about me, my people, my community” (Zemelman, Daniels, Hyde, 2012)
