Presentation transcript:

Lesson outline 1 hour Aspire lesson To broaden the students understanding of the range of roles and jobs available in the working world by a: exploring the number of jobs involved in producing a mobile phone and b: exploring the career pathway of the BA. To introduce the idea that the job market always changes. To consider that different roles may offer different rewards and fulfil different motivations. And that this might change over time. To ask the students to consider their own possible motivations for going to work and explain their reasons. Activity 1: Discussion with the BA about their Job/career and company. Activity 2: How many jobs challenge using smart phone. BA to ensure widest possible list created by the class. Marketing, branding, advertising, apps, paypal etc etc. Activity 3:Why Go to Work? Diamond Nine activity to rank different motivating factors. BA to discuss own motivating factors, in particular that these change over time.

Welcome to our Business Ambassador Please can you tell us about your job. Who do you work for and what do they do? How long have you worked there? Is this your first job? What’s the best thing about your job? Hardest thing? Any other questions from the class?

Class Challenge! How many jobs are involved in producing your smart phone? Work in pairs to create the longest list you can in 5 minutes. Then share with the pair next to you to build and even longer list. Can you beat the Business Ambassadors list?

What is a Career?...the combined total of all events in our lives, including education, training, jobs, volunteering, family and leisure....‘like crazy paving and you have to lay it yourself’ – Sir Cadbury, Director of Cadbury...like a journey that you travel with destinations along the way...full of opportunities to do new things and learn!

Qualifications….. What’s the point? Make sure you don’t spend your life in a dead end job – without qualifications, it is hard to move on from a low-paid, low-skilled job Why? Because achieving a qualification shows an employer that you are organised, can focus and succeed when you put your mind to something. All qualities an employer wants. Qualifications can help you improve your earning power – there is a big pay gap between people with no qualifications those with lower level qualifications and those with higher level qualifications (university level). Why? The higher the qualification the more responsibility you have in a role.

Go Compare……. Consider these jobs. What are the benefits or challenges of each? Gas engineer Construction worker Surgeon Customer Service Advisor Pay? Qualifications needed? Working hours? Inside or outside? Career progression?

What motivates people to go to work? Task : In pairs make a list of all the reasons why people work. Tip – there is more then just ‘to get paid!’ What does our Business Ambassador think? What matters to you? Has this always been the same?

What Motivates Me? Task in groups and individually 1.In your groups talk over your personal response to the question about what might motivate you at work. Think about the ‘pros and cons’ discussed in the last task. Consider people you know and their motivations. 2.Use the laminated copy to try out different options and rank your views on the diamond nine worksheet. 3.When you have considered your answers write your response on the paper copy. Be prepared to justify and explain your decisions about what you decided to include and exclude. 4.Feedback to the class.

Class Reflection and Responses Did everyone make the same choices? Why not? Finally A question for our business ambassador; What have you learned today?

Pathways, qualifications and levels...
