Quick Look First studios established in 1904 – 1905 Largely unknown internationally until after WW2 The structure mimicked the American Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s, six studios maintained majority control of the industry. Categorized into two distinct genres (historically) and (contemporary). First recognized internationally in 1951 with Kurosawa’s Gran Prize Venice Film Festival, Rashomon.

Quick Look After the classic style of 1950s, Japanese film redirected its focus “Japanese New Wave” starting with monster epics like Godzilla and Gangster films called yakuza. During the 1970s these production companies went bankrupt and began to specialize in soft-core porn or pink films. After this they slowly moved into a French Avant Garde feel with films being produced in Japan. By the millennium, Japan moved into a popular genre called animation or anime, inspired by comic books (western looking characters with large eyes, hand drawn figures, digital backgrounds).

Golden Age of Japanese Film (1950-late 1960) Style Americans: Action Europeans: Psychological Thrillers/Teasers Japanese: Overall Mood, Character, and atmosphere. Slower Pacing Shots and sequences extend beyond normal conventions Long scenes with no dialogue Distinct Framing and shot composition, detailed lines. Performances were drawn on ancient tradition and artistic tradition.
