DEFINITION Progressivism: Reform movement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s concerned with curing problems of urbanization and industrialization

DEFINITIONS CONTINUED In your notes define: Reform - make changes in something in order to improve it. Urbanization – A population shift from rural to urban areas Industrialization – A period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agricultural society into an industrial one

WHY PEOPLE WERE ANGRY: Issues in the workplace: Poor working conditions Dangerous workplace – lack of safety High accident rates Between a steel mill in Pittsburg had 25% of its workforce injured or killed on the job Long hours 70% of American industrial laborers worked an average of 54 hours a week

SOCIAL PROBLEMS Widening gap between the rich and the poor Over-crowded cities High poverty rates
