1. I can identify the parts of a small engine. 2. I can explain each part’s function(s). Group 1: Valve Train Components These parts all work together to bring air into cylinder and then push it out.

camshaft It rotates with the crankshaft to lift the valves at the correct times. If this part doesn’t work, the valves won’t lift or the cylinder won’t fire correctly.

camshaft lobes These plastic bumps on the camshaft lift the valve up at the correct time. If this doesn’t work, the engine won’t get the air- fuel mixture at the right time.

valve lifters They open the valve so that air-fuel can be brought in the engine and exhaust out of the engine. If this isn’t working, the engine won’t run!

valve spring It keeps the tension on the valve so the valve stays down when the camshaft lobe is lifting it up. If this doesn’t work, then the air-fuel mixture will leak out of the cylinder and the pressure won’t stay in the cylinder.

valve keepers This keeps the spring locked on the valve so that that the spring doesn’t move around when pressure is on it. If this doesn’t work, then the spring will slip off valve, and the valve won’t stay closed.

intake valve (larger of the two) It brings in air-fuel mixture into the cylinder. If this doesn’t work, then there is no fuel to ignite, and the engine won’t run.

exhaust valve (smaller of the two) It opens for the burned mixture to be pushed out of cylinder. If this doesn’t work, excess burn mixture stays inside cylinder, and it can have negative effects.
