So where is Japan?

 Water separates Japan from China and Korea  Close enough, yet far enough away  Made up of 4,000 islands  Spread out over 1,200 miles  Only 12% of the land is suitable for farming  Few natural resources  Typhoons, earthquakes, and tidal waves

 Controlled by clans  Clan- people that come from common ancestors  Nature gods and goddess  Shinto – way of the gods  Respect for nature

 Yamato clan  Most lacked real power  Figure head rule  Ruling clan in charge

 Buddhism  Sent missions to China to study  Adopted Chinese style of writing  Strong central government  Followed Chinese arts

 Court life became very important  Etiquette  What is etiquette?  Poetry and painting
