Lesson Planning for ECED 324 Math Science Integrated?

Three Child Centered Formats Van de Walle “Three-Part”Math “L-E-S”Science “5E” BeforeLaunchEngage DuringExplore AfterSummarizeExplain Elaborate Evaluate Your task will be to understand the relationships among these three formats.

Math Lesson must focus on math concept/standards Lesson must Engage children Before the math work begins (Launch) Lesson must be clearly child-centered in terms of (Explore) – During the Lesson Involve students in math-related social interaction Use appropriate models or tools for learning math Take a problem-solving approach – Promote student reflective thinking about math During and After the lesson (Summarize)

Science Lesson must focus on science concepts/standards Lesson must use a 5-E format Lesson must be Inquiry-based – Focus on a relevant question – Involve the use of science processes – Use Inductive Reasoning; evidence  conclusion

For both lessons List general background info. (date, time, topic, grade, number of students, general setting) List standards from MD VSC Specifically discuss any IEP students you have and how you’ll address their needs List materials to be used—think about safety Develop flow of lesson – Math : Launch, Explore, Summarize – Science: 5E’s Write questions/steps you’ll use to draw out student ideas and encourage student thinking Consider what evidence you’ll have that you had an impact on the students (Activity pages, for example).

For both lessons 1.General background info. – Date & time – General topic, – Grade, number of students, general setting information 2.List standards from MD VSC 3.Student Diversity: Specifically discuss any IEP students you have and how you’ll address their needs—and other ways you’ll address potential diversity among the students. 4.Materials to be used—think about safety 5.Flow of lesson 1.Math : Launch, Explore, Summarize 2.Science: 5E’s 6.Questions/steps you’ll use to draw out student ideas and encourage student thinking 7.Evidence of Student Impact

Reflection What? So What? Now What?

Can I integrate the two lessons? Yes Write up must be separate for Math & Science Watch out for trivial uses of Math in Science, or Science in Math

Do I HAVE to teach my lessons? In general, I expect that you’ll teach either the math or the science lesson. If you teach two lessons (one science, one math) then you can replace the Center Activity assignment OR the Environmental Education participation and response. Teaching multiple lessons does not allow you to skip multiple assignments
