Reasons for use: 1. Considers both dimensions of the array model 2. Increases algebraic thinking 3. Increases understanding of place value

Procedure: Let’s look at the problem 56 x 32 = ? First: you draw a rectangular box.

Second you break down the number 56 to 50 + 6 Second you break down the number 56 to 50 + 6. And place the new number atop the rectangle Make sure you draw a line down where the two numbers meet. Make sure the line is representative of where they should be on the number line. It does not have to be exact. 50 6
