Learning About Baptism From A Snake It shall be our objective to reveal a Biblical truth frequently distorted by many groups in the religious world and outright denied by others.

INTRODUCTION: Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.” Our study for these sermons is entitled: “A Snake, A Captain, A Blind Man, & Baptism”. It shall be our objective to reveal a Biblical truth frequently distorted by many groups in the religious world and outright denied by others. We shall proceed by examining each of the subject parts separately before establishing how in principle they are related.

THE SNAKE The account of the snake is found in the Old Testament in Numbers 21:4-9. Before examining that passage, permit me to say this about the Old Testament. To Christians, the Old Testament is grand for learning and admonition. The apostle Paul wrote in Romans 15:4 – “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” We hear him again in 1 Corinthians 10:11 – “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”

THE SNAKE But as a law the Old Law has been fulfilled and was taken out of the way when Jesus died on the cross at Golgotha on that Friday afternoon before Pentecost. Colossians 2:14-15 – “Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” The Bible says in 2 Peter 1:21 – “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” In Hebrews 7:22 we are told – “By so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.” Better than what? Better than the Old Testament Law.

THE SNAKE Words could not be plainer than these found in Hebrews 9:15 – “And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” Listen to the Bible’s pronouncement on those today who are attempting to live by the Old Testament Law during the New Testament Age. We read in Galatians 5:4 – “You have (1) become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; (2) you have fallen from grace.” If salvation is to be found by following the Old Testament law, then Christ died a meaningless death. Hear the apostle Paul in Galatians 2:21 – “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”

THE SNAKE In the Old Testament, God demanded exact obedience to His every word. In it are examples of men and women who endeavored to live by the law God had given them. It is learned from the Old Testament that God blesses man only when man obeys God.

THE SNAKE One such example is that found in the record of the brass snake. With a mighty hand God led Israel out of the bondage of Egypt, and for forty years they wandered in the wilderness. They often sinned. On one occasion they murmured against God because of the bread, or manna, He fed them.

THE SNAKE Numbers 21:5-9 – “And the people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread." So the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, ‘We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD that He take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.’ So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.”

THE SNAKE Only those who obeyed by looking at the brass snake were healed. Faith in God would not suffice without obedience. Israel was commanded to OBEY as well as BELIEVE. There is no faith when one does not do the commands of God.

THE SNAKE 1 John 2:3-5 – “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”

THE SNAKE “Was this snake salvation?” No, this was not snake salvation. There was no power in the brass snake on the pole to heal the children of Israel. No sane person would dare say the brass snake healed the Israelites. Nor was it Moses who did the healing.

THE SNAKE The healing was done by God. It was OBEY and be HEALED, or DISOBEY and DIE. Now notice the order of their healing: 1. Belief That looking they would be healed. 2. Obedience The actual looking at the brazen serpent. 3. Healing The benefit (blessing) received upon compliance. BELIEF + OBEDIENCE = HEALING.

CONCLUSION (PART ONE) After a few lessons, we will see how the story of the snake can teach us lessons about baptism. Many in the religious world may be able to understand this lesson, But they fail to understand the parallel when it comes to baptism. We will see and learn the importance of baptism.
