Matthew 4:1-4 “Every Word” 1

Matthew 4:1-4 “1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” 2

Introduction 3 Devil tempted Jesus with food He had just fasted 40 days We would all be hungry after only a 1-2 day fast Jesus Cites scripture - Deuteronomy 8:3 “And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live”

Introduction 4 The word of God must be preached on any Bible subject Cannot pick & choose - 2 Timothy 4:1-8 Cannot use just one point of truth according to one’s agenda Must preach “all the counsel of God” - Acts 20:27 Acts 20:20-32; 1 Peter 4:11 No part is non-essential James 2:10

Albert Barns on Acts 20:27 5 On - “…all the counsel of God” “It means here the will or purpose of God, as revealed in regard to the salvation of men. Paul had made a full statement of that plan-of the guilt of men, of the claims of the law, of the need of a Saviour, of the provisions of mercy, and of the state of future rewards and punishments. Ministers ought to declare all that counsel, because God commands it; because it is needful for the salvation of men; and because the message is not theirs, but God’s, and they have no right to change, to disguise, or to withhold it.”
