ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING: ESTABLISHING A POSITION ON A TOPIC AND USING RELEVANT, SOURCE-BASED INFORMATION TO SUPPORT YOUR STANCE. HOW IS ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING DIFFERENT FROM INFORMATIONAL WRITING? CONNECTION: IF I WANTED TO MAKE A CLAIM THAT THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 IS BETTER THAN THE IPHONE 6S, HOW WOULD GO ABOUT MAKING THAT ARGUMENT AND SUPPORTING THAT CLAIM?

HOW DOES THE REGENTS EXAM SET UP THE ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY? YOU WILL HAVE 90 MINUTES TO READ 4 ARTICLES RELATING TO A TOPIC (IN OUR CASE IT IS CONSUMER PRIVACY) AND WRITE AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY: THE ESSAY (5 PARAGRAPHS) WILL REQUIRE YOU TO STATE A CLAIM, DEVELOP AND SUPPORT YOUR CLAIM WHILE ANALYZING THE ARTICLES, DISTINGUISH YOUR CLAIM FROM THE OPPOSING VIEWPOINT (ACKNOWLEDGE THE COUNTER-CLAIM, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ARGUMENT) AND CITE REFERENCES FROM AT LEAST 3 OF THE 4 ARTICLES.

TIPS: EACH ARTICLE WILL CONTAIN POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INFORMATION REGARDING THE TOPIC. IT WILL BE UP TO YOU TO DETERMINE WHICH INFORMATION IS RELEVANT TO YOUR SIDE OF THE ARGUMENT. WHILE READING, YOU SHOULD BEGIN TO FORMULATE YOUR STANCE ON THE TOPIC, AND UNDERLINE INFORMATION THAT WILL MAKE YOUR ARGUMENT WORK. USE THE ARTICLES TO HELP YOU ORGANIZE YOUR WRITING. EACH ARTICLE DEALS WITH SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT AREAS OF A SIMILAR TOPIC, SO USE THOSE DIFFERENT ARTICLES AS THE BASIS FOR EACH OF YOUR PARAGRAPHS. EX. IF I READ 4 ARTICLES COMPARING THE GALAXY S6 TO THE IPHONE 6S, AND EACH ARTICLE DEALT WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT (CAMERA, HARDWARE, PROCESSOR, AND SOFTWARE) I WOULD CHOOSE 3 AND USE THE TOPICS OF THOSE ARTICLES FOR EACH OF MY 3 BODY PARAGRAPHS.

WHILE READING: UNDERLINE INFORMATION THAT MAY BE VALUABLE TO YOUR STANCE ON DATA COLLECTION. CONSIDER WHICH VIEWPOINT YOU THINK WILL BE EASIEST FOR YOU TO SUPPORT. After Reading: Write a sentence on your stance on the issue. Begin a rough outline (intro., 1 st paragraph, 2 nd, etc… Decide which quotes you will use.

FORMAT FOR ARGUMENT FOR/AGAINST TRACKING CONSUMER’S SHOPPING AND INTERNET DATA. INTRO: YOUR THESIS STATEMENT/CLAIM: OUR WORLD HAS BECOME A PLACE WHERE INDIVIDUAL CONSUMER’S PRIVACY DOES NOT EXIST. MARKETING COMPANIES ARE TAKING TECHNOLOGY TO AN INVASIVE PLACE BY DISREGARDING INDIVIDUALS’ RIGHTS TO PRIVACY. ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY ALLOW COMPANIES TO COLLECT DATA, LIKE OUR LOCATIONS AND SHOPPING HABITS, AND SELL IT TO OUTSIDE MARKETING FIRMS WITHOUT OUR CONSENT. WHILE THERE MAY BE ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO THIS PRACTICE, IT IS NOT WORTH THE PRECIOUSNESS OF INDIVIDUAL PRIVACY. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD IMPOSE A LIMIT AS TO HOW MUCH DATA CAN BE COLLECTED IN ORDER TO PROTECT INDIVIDUALS’ PRIVACY.

FORMAT 2ND PARAGRAPH: ANALYSIS OF CELL PHONE DATA BEING USED. USE QUOTES THAT SUPPORT YOUR STANCE. 3RD PARAGRAPH: ANALYSIS OF MANNEQUIN. 4TH PARAGRAPH: ANALYSIS OF RFID (USE COUNTER-CLAIM FROM THIS ARTICLE TO EXPLAIN POTENTIAL BENEFITS, THEN EXPLAIN WHY THOSE BENEFITS AREN’T WORTH IT). 5 TH PARAGRAPH: CONCLUSION- DRIVE HOME YOUR POINT 1 LAST TIME: NO MATTER THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS, INTRUSIVE DATA COLLECTION IS NOT WORTH THE VIOLATION OF PRIVACY. YOU ARE NOT SUMMARIZING THESE ARTICLES. YOUR AUDIENCE ALREADY KNOWS WHAT THE ARTICLES ARE ABOUT. WE WANT TO SEE HOW YOU PICK A SIDE AND DEFEND IT. CONTINUE TO REITERATE YOUR POINT THROUGHOUT EACH PARAGRAPH, USING INFO. TO ENHANCE YOUR ARGUMENT NOT TO EXPLAIN WHAT EACH ARTICLE IS ABOUT.

OUTLINE ASSIGNMENT: CREATE AN OUTLINE FOR THIS ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY. GUIDELINES: YOU MUST WRITE A COMPLETE INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH OUTLINE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS (STATE WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT AND INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE QUOTE YOU WILL USE) OUTLINE YOUR CONCLUSION (FOR THIS YOU MAY WRITE ONLY 1-2 SENTENCES)
