AP Biology Biology is the only subject in which multiplication is the same thing as division… Cell Cycle Overview Notes

AP Biology Uses of the Cell Cycle and Mitosis  Growth  Increasing number of cells.  Cells do not increase in size.  Tissue Repair  Embryonic Growth  Asexual Reproduction (Binary Fission)

AP Biology Stages of the Cell Cycle  Interphase  Stage G1  Period of cell growth  Cell increases number of organelles  Stage S  DNA replication  Stage G2  Preparation for mitosis  Mitotic Phase  Nuclear division.  Nucleus and genetic information divide.  Cytokinesis  The actual physical division of the cell.  Division of the cytoplasm and its contents.

AP Biology Interphase (longest stage of cell’s life) Divided into 3 phases:  G 1 = 1 st Gap  Cell doing its “everyday job.”  Cell grows.  S = DNA Synthesis  G 2 = 2 nd Gap  Prepares for division.  Cell grows (more).  Produces organelles, proteins, membranes. G0G0 signal to divide Cell is not dividing or preparing to divide.

AP Biology Cell cycle Cell has a “life cycle.” cell is formed from a mitotic division cell grows & matures to divide again cell grows & matures to never divide again G 1, S, G 2, M G1G0G1G0 epithelial cells, blood cells, stem cells brain / nerve cells muscle cells liver cells

AP Biology Cell Cycle Activity Directions: 1. Work with a small group at the lab tables. 2. Cut out one “wheel” and one arrow. 3. Create a hole the “wheel” and the arrow using a hole punch. 4. Use a brass brad to hold the two components together. 5. Describe what occurs in each phase on your cell cycle “wheel.” 6. Glue the cell cycle “wheel” into your notes. Objective: You will create a “wheel” to represent the cell cycle.
