World Population The constant effort towards population… increases the number of people before the means of subsistence are increased. ~Thomas R. Malthus

Demography The study of human populations Birth rate- number of live births annually per 1000 people. Death rate- number of deaths annually per 1000 people. Fertility Rate- the average number of children born to each woman.

Population Growth Birth rate minus Death rate = Natural Growth Migration- the movement of people from place to place. Immigrants- people who move into a country. Immigrants- people who move into a country. Emigrants- people who leave a country to live elsewhere. Emigrants- people who leave a country to live elsewhere.

Population Movement Push factors- negative things that repel people: wars, overcrowding, unemployment, crime, etc. Pull factors- positive things that attract people: jobs, cheap land, mild climate, cultural preferences, etc.

Annual Population Growth

Doubling Time The time it takes a population to double in size at its current growth rate.

Technology & Population

Historic Growth 7.2 Billion

Population Density The average number of people per square unit of land. country’s land area ÷ total population = pop. density

Population Distribution Population is unevenly distributed throughout the world due to natural obstacles, i.e. harsh climates, rugged terrain, etc.
