God’s Part & Man’s Part 1 Kings 19 - Elijah

God’s Part, Man’s Part God Initiates –Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith… –Philip. 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Man Responds –The Story of Elijah…

The Text 1 Kings 19:1-4 Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. [2] Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time." [3] And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. [4] But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.“

The Text 1 Kings 19:5-7 He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, "Arise, eat." [6] Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. [7] The angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you."

Elijah’s Problems: 1. Persecution, Suffering –19:2 "So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.“ 2. A Loss of Perspective –Compare 19:10 with the truth in 19:18 2 Cor. 10:7 “You are looking at things as they are outwardly…”

God’s Part Man’s Part Meets Elijah’s Needs –v.7 “Arise, Eat” Receive the Provision 2 Tim. 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. Philip. 4:19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

The Text Continues… 1 Kings 19:8-9 So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. [9] Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" [9] Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 1 Kings 19:10 He said, "I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 2 Tim. 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

Revelation 1 Kings 19:11-13 So He said, "Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord." And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. [12] After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. [13] When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

God’s Part Man’s Part Meets Elijah’s Needs –v.7 “Arise, Eat” God Reveals Himself Receive the Provision Seek Him Out Psalm 46:10 “Cease striving and know that I am God; Ephes. 3:14-16 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, [15] from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, [16] that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man…so that you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, [19] and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge… Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 1 Cor. 2:16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

God’s Part Man’s Part Meets Elijah’s Needs –v.7 “Arise, Eat” God Reveals Himself Receive the Provision Seek Him Out Worship Him 1.Thankfulness 2.Dependancy 3.Sacrifice Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 1 Peter 5:6-7 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Romans 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 1 John 5:21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols. 1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts Rev. 5:11-12 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, [12] saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing."
