Absolute Value Absolute value of a number: ~on a number line, the distance of that number from 0 ~the absolute value of positive and negative numbers are ALWAYS POSITIVE because distance is positive ~absolute value bars are used to show absolute value of a number ex. The absolute value of -5 is 5. Written as |-5| = 5 The absolute value of 5 is 5. Written as |5| = 5
Example 1 Find the value of |-7| on the number line.
Example 2 Hannah wrote a check for more money than she has in her bank account. The balance in her account if now -$60. How much does Hannah owe the bank, in dollars?
Example 3 A team of mountaineers has climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. The temperature at the summit is less than -15 degrees F. Describe how many degrees Fahrenheit below 0 degrees F th temperature is.
