Plagiarism

What is plagiarism? “To steal and pass off as one’s own (the ideas and words of another)” Webster’s Third New International Dictionary of the English Language

Examples of plagiarism  A direct quote without any quotation marks or a citation.  A direct quote enclosed in quotation marks but containing no citation.  A paraphrase without a citation.

Examples of proper use of resources  A direct quote enclosed in quotation marks and containing a citation.  A paraphrase containing a citation.

Tips for Avoiding Plagiarism  Know the difference between common knowledge and information that needs to be cited.  Take notes when reading sources.  Give credit to authors of your sources by providing citations. (in-text citations and works cited list citations)  Don’t procrastinate.
