What is a Sound Designer?

Journal 9/1/15 What is the importance of a Sound Designer in the Theatre Business? What do they do? Do you think the job is easy? Why or why not? (5 sentence minimum response)

Who are they? Someone in charge of anything heard during the production. Includes: Live music Recorded music Live sound effects Recorded sound effects Vocal projection of the actors

Expected responsibilities: Engineers and instructs the set-up of the sound system in the space. Knows the sound system inside and out. Works closely with the director in deciding what is appropriate for a show. Communicates with the designers

Other responsibilities: Acquire pre-recorded sound effects and decide where they go during the production. Record his/her own sound effects. Design parts of the set that can be used to create sound as “organic” sound effects. Choose previously recorded music for scene changes, underscoring, or featured moments during the production. Compose music and recruit musicians to play it. Balance the orchestra during musicals. Provide mics for the orchestra. Reinforce the actor’s voices with wireless mics.
