 Pre- Industrial Revolution People lived like their ancestors. Farmers- hoped for good harvest & depended on the weather. Rich & poor families small- high infant mortality. Life expectancy s: London, England:1750- largest city in Europe; 700,000 people. 25% Europeans lived in towns. People lived in small country villages. Didn’t go beyond village. Travelers told of the outside world.

 Village Life Rural- farmers. Wealthy landowners controlled land. Rented land to small farmers. Families’ owned/rented small strips of land. Permitted fair land distribution if disaster struck. Farmers worked cooperatively. Private/public lands not fenced off.

 Village Life con’t Village commons- land all could use. Farmers gathered wood & raised livestock on the commons. Poorer farmers used public lands for crop-raising. Village economies limited- transport of goods difficult. No profit. Villages self-sufficient: grew food, built homes, made clothes & tools.

 Village Life con’t Rich rural land owners- country estates. Servants ran households. Renters of land- small, poorly lit cottages. Shared quarters with farm animals. Daily activities devoted to farming. Everyone in family worked. People worked in small industries or coal mines besides farming. Work schedules revolved around farm activities. People in industry helped farmers. Winter- farmers worked in mines or shops. Year—round income.

 Wool 1700s: demand for wool rises. Merchants hired workers to produce wool at home. System of labor called domestic system. Spread to leatherworking and lace making industries.
