Scramble for Africa

Imperialism When a powerful nation takes political, economic, and cultural control over another nation. For example, Africa was carved up by European countries so to gain raw materials for industrialization.

By the late 1890's, the desire of big business for foreign markets and sources of raw materials encouraged territorial expansion overseas.

Colony An area in which a foreign nation gained control over a region by settlement or conquest. For example, Great Britain controlled and settled the Thirteen American Colonies.

The US defeated Spain during the Spanish American War and acquired colonies abroad, fulfilling industry's craving for new sources of raw materials and the creation of a global empire.

Commercial competition with other imperialist countries encouraged further expansionism.

The White Man’s Burden The attitude of Europeans & U.S. that their culture was superior. Imperialist nations spread their superior culture to less developed nations. Imperialist nations used this belief to justify imposing their values & beliefs on other cultures.

Causes of Imperialism Balance of Power White Man's Burden Economic Motives The Industrial Revolution created an insatiable demand for raw materials and new markets. Nationalism European nations wanted to demonstrate their power and prestige to the world. Balance of Power European nations were forced to acquire new colonies to achieve a balance with their neighbors and competitors. White Man's Burden The Europeans’ sense of superiority made them feel obligated to “civilize the heathen savages” they encountered.

Effects of European Imperialism Immediate Effects Exploitation of colonial resources Collapse of local economies Brutal treatment of local populations Worldwide impact of European conflicts Spread of Christianity Long Range Effects Breakdown of traditional culture New transportation and communication systems in colonies Improved health care and education in colonies Growth of nationalism in colonies
